Synopsis
Identity begins with a name, and the identity of Christ begins with a name that was given, not chosen. Joseph did not name the Child. Mary did not name the Child. The Child was named in heaven and the name was delivered by an angel with the reason attached: thou shalt call his name JESUS, for he shall save his people from their sins. The name is a job description.
The name in the three tongues
In Hebrew the name is Yeshua, a shortened form of Yehoshua. It is built upon the covenant Name of God — the first syllable is the Name itself — joined to the root yashaʿ, to save, to deliver, to bring into a wide place. The name therefore does not mean merely Saviour. It means: THE LORD IS SALVATION. The name is a sentence about God before it is a label for a man.
In Aramaic — the speech of the streets of Nazareth and Capernaum, the tongue of the Peshitta — the name is Yeshuʿ. This is what His mother called Him. This is what the leper called Him. This is the sound that fell on the ears of Galilee.
In Greek, which had no consonant for the Hebrew ayin and could not end a masculine name in a vowel, the name became Iēsous, with the sigma added for declension. From the Greek it passed into Latin as Iesus and into English as Jesus. The English form is therefore three removes from the sound His mother made — and yet it saves, because the power was never in the phonetics. It was in the Person the name points to.
