Synopsis

Prophecy in the New Testament and Apocrypha

If the Old Testament is the seedbed of prophecy, the New Testament is its flowering. Here we see promises fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ and promises yet awaiting their ultimate realization at His return. The New Testament transforms the shadow into substance: the Messiah long foretold arrives, the Kingdom is proclaimed, the Church is born, and the revelation of the end times is unveiled.

This second volume builds upon the foundation of the first, tracing prophecy through the words of Jesus, the letters of the apostles, and the climactic visions of the Book of Revelation. The Gospels are filled with prophecy, not only in Jesus’ fulfillment of Old Testament promises but also in His own predictions. He foretold His death and resurrection, the destruction of Jerusalem, the persecution of the Church, and the signs of His second coming. In Matthew 24–25, often called the Olivet Discourse, He gave His disciples a roadmap of the last days: wars, famines, false messiahs, the abomination of desolation, and His glorious return.

The epistles, too, carry a prophetic note. Paul explains the mystery of the rapture, the rise of the “man of lawlessness,” and the final trumpet of resurrection. Peter warns of scoffers in the last days and points to the fiery renewal of creation. John affirms that many antichrists have come, but one final deceiver is yet to appear. Jude reminds believers that the Lord is coming with ten thousands of His saints to execute judgment. Every New Testament writer understood that history was racing toward a climactic conclusion.

At the heart of this book is the Revelation of Jesus Christ, given to John on Patmos. Here we see the throne of heaven, the Lamb who is worthy, the seals, trumpets, and bowls of wrath, the rise of Babylon and the Beast, and the ultimate triumph of Christ at Armageddon. Revelation is not meant to confuse or terrify, but to assure believers that God is in control and that the Lamb wins.

In addition to the New Testament, this volume also considers the Apocryphal writings. While not part of inspired Scripture, these texts shed light on Jewish expectations of the end times in the centuries leading up to Christ. Books such as 1 Enoch, 2 Esdras, and the Maccabean writings reveal a people yearning for God’s kingdom, imagining cosmic battles, angelic messengers, and the vindication of the righteous. They help us understand the prophetic climate into which Jesus and the apostles spoke.

This book is both explanatory and practical. It shows how prophecy strengthens faith, calls for endurance, and warns against deception. It equips readers to discern the “spirit of antichrist” already at work in the world while holding fast to the blessed hope of Christ’s return.

In a world of uncertainty, the New Testament and its prophetic visions offer clarity, urgency, and comfort. What was promised in the Old Testament has begun to be fulfilled; what remains is the glorious return of Christ and the renewal of all things.

the story begun in Genesis — from the promise of the Redeemer to the unveiling of His eternal kingdom.
