These translations are based on the original public-domain serials by Ponson du Terrail.
Rocambole's adventures move to the fog and squalor of Victorian London. Under the alias of the Grey Man, the reformed outlaw wages war on the city's predators — chief among them the baby-farmer Mrs Fanoche, who traffics in stolen and unwanted children, and the ruthless Lord Palmure. With the Cockney rogue Shocking at his side, the Grey Man fights to save a hunted Irishwoman and a kidnapped boy from London's cruellest trades. This opening volume is the prologue, 'The Baby-Farmer.'
Our aim throughout is readability. Rather than reproduce the clipped, one-sentence-per-line style of the original serial, Sofia E.V. Hamett has rendered these novels into the natural English of a modern thriller: faithful to the plot, the characters and the events, but written to feel alive to a reader today. Nothing has been abridged.
