This book began, as most honest books do, with a question we could not stop hearing. In our practice at Dr. RAD The Attachment Code Breaker in Lakeland, Florida, across years of working with individuals navigating covert narcissism, relational trauma, and what we have come to call attachment injury, a single question appeared with a frequency that eventually became impossible to ignore. It was never asked the same way twice, but it was always, at its core, the same question: If they hate me, why do they act like they love me?
Sometimes it was a woman describing her mother — a woman who had devoted decades of visible, public energy to her daughter's life, who had attended every school event and every medical appointment and every milestone, and who had also, in the private language of their relationship, managed to communicate her daughter's inadequacy in a thousand ways so subtle that no single instance could be named without sounding like an overreaction. Sometimes it was a man describing his partner — someone who expressed concern for him constantly, who worried aloud about his health and his career and his choices, and who had, through that very concern, made him feel surveilled, diminished, and fundamentally untrustworthy of his own judgment.
Sometimes it was a professional describing a colleague who championed them publicly and undermined them privately. Sometimes it was a young adult describing a parent who told them they were proud, while communicating, through a thousand micro-signals, that pride was something they had not quite earned and perhaps never would.
