Theo Carter loves football, model rockets and making Grandad laugh. But since the smooth patches started appearing in his hair, his world has been getting smaller. No swimming. No trampoline park. No lunchtime football, in case his cap falls off and everyone sees. Theo has alopecia, and the hardest part isn't the hair he's losing. It's the word might. His hair might grow back. He might lose more. Nobody can tell him which.
Then Grandad arrives with a box of plastic and a rocket to build. A teacher sits down on the corridor floor beside him and says the only two words that help. And in the middle of a lunchtime match, losing seven-three, a defender bumps his shoulder, Theo's cap goes flying, and the ball is still rolling towards him.
What Theo does next changes everything. Because, as Grandad says, different isn't the same as less.
Funny, honest and quietly powerful, Theo and the Cap That Flew Off is a story for children aged 7 to 10 who have ever wanted to hide, and especially for children growing up with alopecia areata, who deserve to see a boy like them on the page: still playing, still laughing, still Theo. It includes a short note for parents, teachers and carers explaining alopecia and how to support a child living with it.
From the author of Ben and the Bridge of Brave Words, Mia and the Brave Skin and Leo and the Smile That Stayed.
