Historical Background of this Text
The Jūhachidō Nenju Kubi Shidai (The Essential Sequence of the Mindful Recitation of the Eighteen Paths), edited and arranged by Yūkai (宥快) on December 28 of the ninth year of the Ōei era (1402), is the basic sequence used at the very beginning of the Four Preliminary Practices in the Chuin-ryu lineage (中院流), and today it is still widely used for both oral transmission and actual practice. This sequence was compiled based on the "Jūhachidō Nenju Shidai," an ancient sequence written by Kōbō Daishi (弘法大師) as its bottom text. This original sequence is the very text that Shunkaku (俊覚)—Chiun-bō (智運房), the superintendent (kengyō / 検校) of Muryōju-in (無量寿院), who was the disciple of Ryōzen (良禅) of Kitamuro-in (北室院)—had transmitted to Echibō Kakkō (恵智房覚弘) in the second year of the Chōkan era (1164). Later, in the third year of the Kyōhō era (1718), Shingen (真源) of Jōren-in (成蓮院) discovered this ancient sequence at the Okuno-in Worship Hall (奥之院拝殿), and the Chuin-ryu lineage has since used it as the authoritative text. Yūkai compiled the "Kubi Shidai" by using this original sequence as his bottom text, collating and comparing it with various oral instructions and manuscripts transmitted in the Chuin-ryu lineage. The term "Kubi (頸)" in the title was added by Yūkai himself to mean "extracting the essentials", and "Shidai (次第)" represents the orderly sequence of actual practice without confusion.
