Synopsis

Five friends. One fair. One night that has been waiting a hundred years.

It's the last Friday of sixth form, and Ryan Poole almost didn't come. He's the quiet one, the boy from the care homes, the gap that Carly Hewitt — warm, freckled, impossible to refuse — decided to fill with an invitation. By ten o'clock, he's in someone's back garden with a lukewarm can and four friends who will, before dawn, become the only people in the world who matter to him.

Then they see the lights.

A fairground has appeared in Gallows Field. No advance notice, no permits, no logic — just a Laughing Gate, a wrong-pitched carousel, and clowns with fluorescent-white skin who smile and never blink. The friends go in because that is what people do at eighteen on a warm July night. They don't know yet that the fair has been visiting market towns for over a century. They don't know it takes one person from each town it touches. They don't know that this time, it has come for five.

As the gate vanishes behind them and the rules of the place reveal themselves one by one — the candy that does more than feed you, the mirrors that lag a fraction of a second behind, the Hall of Freaks where the draped shapes are not what they seem — Ryan begins to understand that the fair has chosen them with terrible precision. Heart, brain, lungs, nervous system, eyes and tongue. Five souls to complete a thing that should never have been built. And somewhere behind a black curtain, a man who entered in 1919 has been waiting for someone to open it.
