Synopsis
Some detectives look for clues. Earl Boggs digs for them.
Earl Boggs has been reading the ground for thirty-four years. He knows what a good signal sounds like, how to research a site before he ever swings a coil, and exactly where to look on an eleven-acre field outside Ringgold, Georgia that nobody has touched since 1863.
What he doesn't expect to find is a sealed burner phone buried four inches down next to a Confederate artillery shell.
When the landowner turns up dead the next morning, Earl realizes that whatever Wayne Tatum was protecting in that field was worth killing for — and that the only person who can figure out what it is happens to be standing in a hole he dug himself.
With his wife Rayleen, his detecting partner Burl, and a librarian who keeps better records than the county itself, Earl works the case the same way he works a site: slow, methodical, and by knowing things nobody else thought to look for.
