Synopsis
A shepherd, a psalmist, a soldier, and a sovereign – these are just a few of the many roles that David, the son of Jessie, fulfilled over the seventy years of his long and eventful life. Very few men in history have ever achieved the degree of success or the diversity of accomplishments that David did in his lifetime, and only David, of all those who came before or after him, has ever had the distinction of being called by the LORD, “a man after God’s own heart.”
Centuries before the term was introduced to literature, David was the ultimate “Renaissance Man.” David was as renowned for his prowess with a quill and parchment as he was with a sword and buckler. His personal valor on the battlefield and his feats of courage while leading his men against the enemy were equaled only by his skill in playing deftly on the harp and his genius in composing complex verses of Hebrew poetry.
David’s epic journey in life (which is cataloged in the Old Testament books of I and II Samuel as well as I Kings and I Chronicles) took him to many strange and diverse places along the way; but through it all, at the end of his life David could say in Psalm 23:6, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” In order to gain a better understanding of one of the Bible’s most prominent characters, we will travel to each of these stops along David’s journey of life as we study the times in which he lived and the portions of Scripture that recount his story.
