Where the Fence Breaks is set in 1824 on Zog, an island under foreign occupation. One morning, soldiers drag Alfred's teachers out of their classrooms mid-lesson. The next day, new ones arrive with a new curriculum and a soldier posted at the back of every room.
Alfred is sixteen. His father was arrested for passing resistance letters through the post office. His best friend left to join the resistance. Everyone around him; his mother, his neighbours, his classmates, have all learned to keep their heads down and get on with it.
The problem is that Alfred can't stop noticing things. There are inconsistencies in the new history lessons, much of Zogite history is being rewritten and those that remain cannot speak freely. However the most chilling observation is the fact that one of his new teachers isn't really a teacher at all.
And Doran Karder, Alfred's history teacher, notices that Alfred notices.
Karder isn't really interested in Alfred. He's interested in who Alfred might lead him to.
What follows is a slow, suffocating cat-and-mouse. Karder sets traps in his lesson questions. Alfred tries to plant doubt in his classmates without giving Karder anything he can use. Every answer Alfred gives goes straight into a ledger. Every question he asks is a risk. And when Alfred finds himself meeting with someone who can get information to the resistance, he's forced into the open.
Alfred's father thought he was being careful. His friend thought he was being brave. Neither of them are around to say if it was worth it. Now Karder is closing in, and Alfred has to decide whether fighting back is courage or suicide.
