Some children dare each other to close a closet door. In Harrowick, they dare each other to open one.
The Closet Game has been passed between children for generations — a whispered dare, a set of rules, a name nobody says too loudly. Most children grow up and forget it. Some do not grow up at all.
Eleven-year-old Nora Bell has spent her life keeping her four-year-old sister Wren away from the game. She knows the rules have teeth. She knows their grandmother Mara wedged every closet door open with folded grocery bags and called it a habit. She knows that some things adults dismiss as folklore have been collecting children from Harrowick since before anyone alive can remember.
When seven-year-old Owen Miller vanishes from his bedroom closet overnight — leaving behind only his shoes placed side by side, his coat still warm on the hanger, and a note written in a dead boy's handwriting — Nora understands what the adults are still trying to explain away. The game is not finished. It is not even close to finished.
And Wren, stubborn and bright and desperate to prove she is not a baby, is exactly the kind of child the dark has always loved most.
