The environment is one of the most precious resources that is available to any country and its people. For rapidly developing countries like India, there are a range of environmental problems such as pollution, deforestation, disappearance of wildlife and sea life. Environmental laws are thus needed to protect and preserve the environment from destruction.
In this book, we first present an introduction to issues related to ecology and environment. We then summarize the main laws that are available to protect the environment. These laws cover different aspects of the environment such as wildlife, pollution control, forest cover and waste management. Taken together, these laws present a comprehensive system to protect and preserve the biodiversity and environmental resources connected with the air, water and soil of India.
It is hoped that this book would provide a good introductory guidance to people who are interested in environmental issues and who wish to be familiar with the laws in India related to the environment.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Introduction to Ecology and Environmental Laws in India is a clear, accessible guide to understanding both the science behind environmental concerns and the laws enacted to address them. The book begins with a grounding in ecology, the science of how living organisms interact with their environment, covering ecosystems, biodiversity, ecological succession, and predator-prey relationships. This foundation helps readers understand why environmental protection matters, not just what the laws say.The second half of the book is a systematic survey of India's major environmental legislation, including:The Forest Conservation Act 1980 and the landmark 2023 Amendment - what changed, what is at stake, and how courts have respondedThe Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974 - controlling industrial effluents and protecting India's rivers and lakesThe Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981 - standards, enforcement, and the ongoing battle against urban air pollutionThe Environment Protection Act 1986 - the umbrella legislation born from the Bhopal tragedyThe Coastal Regulation Zone Notifications - protecting India's fragile coastlinesHazardous Waste Management Rules - regulating toxic, biomedical, and municipal solid wasteThe Energy Conservation Act 2001 and its 2022 Amendment - including India's new Carbon Credit Trading Scheme aligned with Paris Agreement commitmentsThe Forest Rights Act 2006 - recognising the rights of tribal and forest-dwelling communitiesThe Biological Diversity Act 2002 and 2023 Amendment - preventing biopiracy and preserving India's rich biodiversityThe National Green Tribunal Act 2010 - how India's specialised environmental court works and what remedies it offersThe Wildlife Protection Act 1972 - safeguarding endangered species and protected areasThe book also covers environmental protection under the Indian Constitution, India's international obligations under the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the role of the Central and State Pollution Control Boards.Written in plain language for non-specialists, this book is ideal for law students, environmental activists, concerned citizens, corporate compliance officers, policy researchers, and anyone who wants to understand how India's environmental legal system works, and how to use it.
