THE FIRST SEASON is a reminiscent novel of the beginning of high school girls cross country running and the women’s running boom leading up to the first U.S. Women’s Olympic Trials Marathon. Growing up with limited opportunities, and no sports, teenaged Linda feels a disquieting portent as ideas about her future begin to germinate. Amidst the feminist movement of the 1970s, Linda is inspired to attempt to qualify for the first Minnesota Girls State Cross Country Championship, despite her school having no girls team. Running becomes a transformative experience, revealing her inner strength and growing confidence, but also an unexpected, more desolate part of herself. Against the backdrop of The Beatles breakup, moon landings and anti-war protests, Linda experiences the restorative power of running as she charts a course toward personal fulfillment and happiness.
