Meet young Joshua Bernstein in his twenties as he discovers his profession of teaching and the world of women. Mr. B. (as he is known by his students) wants to be the best English teacher his students have ever known. In his quest, he tries new methods and develops new strategies. Unfazed by his failures, he keeps pursuing activities which give real growth to his students. He builds a bookcase for his students to develop their reading abilities only to discover that this method does not work unless it is supervised in some way. He wins a grant for photography equipment only to discover that his students do not understand the basics of how to compose picture. Still undaunted, he teaches his students "the writing process" where under his instruction, they slowly begin to grow as writers. In his teaching of literature, he develops his idea of "the levels of complexity" which challenges his students to think differently about the books they study.
At the same time, he works tirelessly to inspire and help his students, he pursues a personal life only to be defeated by forces he cannot control. He learns to accept that he is but one person in a vast world with different priorities than his own. Still he perseveres and wrestles out of reality a bit of truth for himself.
Along the journey, he shares his "truths" with his best friend, Alejandro Lopez.
To his credit, Joshua learns from all of his experiences.
