Synopsis

Haldi’s Story: A Tale of War and Renewal Across Two Homelands tells the remarkable story of Haldi Reissaar Svanberg’s quest to discover her identity. When just 5 years old, her native country Estonia is caught up in WWII, leaving her family no option but to flee. This very personal memoir charts her family’s escape, their trials in numerous European refugee camps, and the challenges of adjusting to a new life in the United States. Echoing the universal story of opportunity in a new land, Haldi recounts her experiences of education, career, and making a family of her own.

As she loses significant links to her past, however, she becomes nostalgic for her earlier homeland that seems gone forever, buried under/devoured by a Soviet Union occupation lasting nearly 50 years. Only when her country’s independence is restored and Haldi is able to return to Estonia, does she discover what it truly means to have a homeland—or in this case, to be fortunate enough to have two.
