"The Strunk and White for Latin"
Latin: A Joyously Brief Introduction is, as the title suggests, a concise, enjoyable introduction to the Latin language, its literature, and history in just under 100 pages. Unlike traditional textbooks, this book is structured so that each page is self-contained, covering a single topic in a clear, digestible format. You can pick up the book, open to any page, and immediately learn something valuable—whether it’s grammar, pronunciation, a historical insight, or a translation technique.
-- You'll find a dictionary at the end of the book with the 200 most commonly used words in the Latin language with page references to practice translating each word.
-- You'll find 10 passages from 10 of the most well-know Latin authors (from the late Republic to early Empire) you can practice translating.
-- There are three approaches covered on how to go about translating Latin into English.
-- There's a useful index of topics and authors and a short bibliography of useful resources.
Who this book is for:
Curious Learners & Enthusiasts – Ideal for those who want to explore Latin without committing to a formal textbook.
Self-Learners – Designed to be approachable and engaging, even for those who have never studied Latin before.
Those Looking for a Refresher – Perfect for readers who learned Latin in the past and want to reconnect with the language in a lively, modern way.
Not a Traditional Textbook – Latin: A Joyously Brief Introduction is not a step-by-step instructional course with full translations; instead, it immerses readers in Latin as a living language.
What this book offers:
A Unique Approach to Latin – Learn Latin by encountering it in its original form, just as it was read and spoken in antiquity.
Authentic Latin Passages – Includes selections from classical authors like Cicero, Vergil, and Caesar, encouraging readers to engage directly with the language rather than relying on full translations.
Clear Grammar and Syntax Explanations – Designed for readability and insight, with concepts introduced naturally, making Latin feel intuitive rather than overwhelming.
Pronunciation and Poetic Meter – Explore how Latin was spoken and written in verse, including epic poetry’s dactylic hexameter.
Women Writers – Features the work of Sulpicia, one of the few surviving female poets from ancient Rome.
Practical Translation Techniques – Guides readers on how to translate and work with real Latin texts, fostering independent learning.
Whether you’re a student, a lifelong learner, or simply curious about Latin, Latin: A Joyously Brief Introduction makes learning the language an enjoyable and intellectually stimulating experience—one page at a time.

I'm passionate about people and purpose; about learning and how it empowers; about expression and meaning through discovery.I earned my PhD in Classical Studies from Boston University, where my dissertation was guided by Jeffrey Henderson. I hold a BA from Luther College, where I double-majored in Latin and Greek. My journey in classical studies began at Captain Shreve High School, a public school in Shreveport, Louisiana, where I was born.My education was deeply enriched by my mentor, Donald Carne-Ross, through the study of the Greek Anthology, focusing on Anyte and Erinna. I also contributed to significant academic projects, working under Wolfgang Haase on "Aufstieg und Niedergang der römischen Welt" and the "International Journal of the Classical Tradition."I've taught at Boston University and Austin College and worked at major publishing houses such as McGraw-Hill and Cengage Group. I've also been a leader in learning technology at Cerego and Memre. In late 2023, I founded Bountisphere, followed by the establishment of Westbrae Literary Group in June 2024, where I serve as the first Editorial Director.
