Jonathan F. Durr is an Alaskan archeologist and woodsman who has lived most of his life in a secluded cabin off the road system in the shadow of the Alaska Range. In this collection of essays that span decades of woods life, Durr depicts both the simplistic and the complex of woods life, from following the tracks of a wolf that had lain in the woods near his cabin one dark winter night to the death of a charging bear with a mangled jaw from some long ago injury.
