They were Jewish. They had escaped oppression in Eastern Europe. They spoke Yiddish. They ate matzo ball soup, pickled herring, and cheese blintz’ (not together). On Friday nights, they lit Sabbath candles, drank sweet dark wine and ate challah bread, first saying prayers over each. On Saturday morning, they walked to neighborhood synagogues to recite prayers that were the same as those recited by their ancestors, dating back to biblical times. They were poor but they were now in a land of freedom and liberty.
They were my grandparents and my grandparents’ friends and neighbors, now living in a new country, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in America.
Their children were first-generation American-born. Taught the traditions brought from the Old Country and experiencing previously unheard of freedoms (certainly unheard of for those of their faith) – theirs was the generation that offered hope for growth, safety, prosperity. They were my parents, my aunts and uncles.
I and my brother and our cousins became more Americanized by the moment. We knew our grandparents. We are today the last generation with that first-hand touch with history – generally unknown to succeeding generations. I could not let that history die. So, at nearly 80 years of age, I’ve written my first book.
This is a snapshot of my family – from my immigrant grandparents and their children through three subsequent generations. It is their story and it is my story. It is a story of values and traditions. And it is a story of movement from homogeneity to diversity. By sharing the impact those earliest generations of Bolnicks in America had on my life and providing insight into the kind of people they were – and subsequent generations are – I’ve endeavored here to connect the dots that make a complete picture of this family that I love.
