Synopsis

A heart-warming and funny memoir about a young Iowa farm girl growing up in 1940s America during World War II, featuring beautiful illustrations.

The Way We Lived follows Marilyn Ennen Peterson growing up on a farm near Lakota, in northern Iowa, in the 1940s. With no electricity, indoor bathroom, running water, phone, or television, some might think life was difficult. But not so. One doesn't miss what one never had.

This adventurous young girl learned a lot, mostly by her own resolve. Some of it was right, some not so much. But adding a little humor always made it a little easier.

Take her hand as she learns, grows, and matures. You may discover that this simple way of life was far from going without. They had everything they needed.

Perfect for history buffs, those nostalgic for a simpler time, and anyone who wonders what it would have been like to be a child in 1940s rural America.

À propos de l'auteur

Marilyn Ennen Peterson wrote vignettes about life with her family in rural Iowa in the 1940s. A typical, and mostly happy, family that endured the very simple life and the changes brought on by World War II. It was an era that few can recall.

She has written articles for The Christian Herald and Trail and Timberline, a magazine published by The Colorado Mountain Club. She later became Editor of that magazine.

A favorite bit of writing was the summarization of a couple's life together when celebrating their 50th anniversary - a joyous occasion.

Marilyn lives in Colorado near her children and grandchildren, where she enjoys playing cards and drinking the occasional White Russian.

Although Marilyn and her sister had their disagreements when they were young, as shown in this book, they both grew up, maturing into loving sisters who supported each other for the rest of their lives. They were known as "The Ennen Girls".
