Synopsis

This is the first volume of a two-volume book on Chinese history and government, written with Western readers particularly in mind. The author's intention is to give Western readers a better understanding of Chinese history, and of the Chinese point of view generally, in the hope that this will help to promote peace between East and West, particularly between China and the United States. In format it is a straightforward chronological history, focusing on political aspects and developments. This first volume covers: the early dynasties ((c. 2070 BCE - 907 CE); the Song dynasty (960 - 1279); the Mongols and the Yuan dynasty (1271 - 1368); the Ming dynasty (1368 - 1644); and the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1912). One chapter is devoted to each of these periods, with the exception of the last which occupies three chapters. Through the stories of the rise and fall of successive dynasties, readers will come to appreciate the remarkable persistence of the Chinese civilization and system of government, continually reasserted by the Confucian tradition and the associated examination system for entry into government service. But this very persistence will be seen, in the final chapter, to be fatal to the Qing's ability to modernize, and prevent the depredations of China by the Imperial powers and Japan.
