In the apocalypse the only thing worse than dying is being unable to do so. The First Woe has arrived. A plague of supernatural creatures has risen from the abyss tasked with a singular and terrifying directive. They must torment mankind for five months. In this new hell on earth death has fled. Suicide is impossible. The scream is the only language left. But amidst the smoke and the agony two agents have been deployed from the Gates. Blake and Dysmas are Recruiters. They are beings sent from paradise back into the meat grinder of the apocalypse. Their mission is near impossible. They must navigate a world gone mad while surviving the unkillable swarm.
