Synopsis
They were teenagers who refused to conform.
In the shadow of Nazi Germany, a generation of young people in and around Cologne found ways to escape the rigid discipline of the Hitler Youth. Calling themselves the Edelweiss Pirates, they gathered after dark, traveled into the countryside, challenged Nazi authority, and, for some, went further, fighting Hitler Youth patrols and spreading Allied propaganda.
But who were the Edelweiss Pirates? Were they courageous anti-Nazi resisters, rebellious teenagers, or something far more complicated?
Drawing on police files, government reports, newspaper accounts, scholarly research, and rare archival materials from ten German archives, this book explores the lives, motives, actions, and experiences of these young rebels. Their story reveals that resistance under the Third Reich was rarely simple, and that even acts of defiance could emerge from motives as varied as freedom, friendship, frustration, adventure, and political opposition.
The Edelweiss Pirates brings a little-known chapter of Nazi Germany to life, challenging easy definitions of resistance and asking a compelling question: What does it mean to resist when you are still a teenager trying to find your freedom?
