The novel's main character, Tom Sanders, is a dedicated runner. He trains every day for marathons, but he also runs to escape his problems, craving the runner's high. The story follows Tom's quest to find peace and purpose in his life. Throughout his journey, he experiences various forms of suffering and loss, but he grows from these experiences and emerges stronger and more focused. After traveling from Tucson to Vancouver, Tom was captivated by the beauty and inspiration of the American desert. However, he eventually finds himself penniless in a Victoria RV park, struggling to make ends meet. While searching for a way to turn his life around, Tom learns about an intriguing research project that aims to discover a shortcut to enlightenment. Eager for financial support, he seizes the opportunity to participate. Though the book provides no easy answers, it leaves readers feeling more aware and attuned to the power of the true self.
