Houston's comic book fandom did not emerge overnight. It was built over decades by passionate collectors, small comic shops, fan clubs, conventions, and the people who transformed a niche hobby into a lasting community. In this richly illustrated history, historian and longtime comic fan Dr. Robert Meaux traces the growth of Houston fandom from the 1960s to the present, exploring the rise of local comic shops, the excitement of early conventions, and the fans who helped shape the city's pop culture identity.
Drawing on interviews, rare photographs, fanzines, newspapers, convention programs, and personal collections, the book documents the individuals and organizations that helped Houston become one of the South's major comic book communities. Readers will encounter the early fan networks that connected isolated collectors, the stores that became gathering places for fans, and the conventions that brought nationally known creators and celebrities to Houston. The story also follows the changing comic book industry itself, from the rise of the Direct Market and the speculation boom of the 1990s to the mainstream success of comic culture in the modern era.
Both a celebration of fandom and a work of regional history, this book preserves a largely forgotten chapter of Houston's cultural past while showing how local experiences reflected larger changes in American comic book culture. For collectors, convention-goers, historians, and pop culture enthusiasts alike, this is the story of how Houston's comic book fandom grew from a small network of dedicated fans into a vibrant and enduring community.
