Synopsis

Why do good organizations struggle despite having capable leaders, committed boards, and accepted governance practices?

Nonprofit boards often respond to recurring problems in familiar ways. They improve meetings, revise policies, restructure committees, recruit new members, update strategic plans, or replace executive leaders. These steps may help, but they do not always address the deeper condition causing the struggle.

On Course introduces the Compass Governance Framework, a practical new way to understand the organization as a whole.

The framework begins with a simple principle: the environment shapes what the organization needs. Different organizations face different conditions, pursue different resources, and require different combinations of organizational systems, leadership, and governance. A structure that works well for one nonprofit may be entirely wrong for another.

Using the familiar metaphor of an organizational journey, On Course helps boards examine eight essential elements:

  • the Compass that defines purpose;
  • the Destination the organization hopes to reach;
  • the Map that establishes the route;
  • the Vehicle that carries the mission;
  • the Driver who leads the organization;
  • the Navigation System provided by the board;
  • the Crew that performs the work; and
  • the Dashboard that reveals whether progress is real.

Readers will learn why organizations with similar missions may need very different ways of operating, how changing environmental conditions affect organizational needs, and why leadership, systems, governance, strategy, and performance must be considered together.

The book also challenges a common assumption in organizational life: that bigger is better. In the Compass Governance Framework, a Boat is not inferior to a Bus, and a Bus is not inferior to a Plane. Each is suited to a different journey.

The objective is not growth. The objective is congruence.

Written in practical, accessible language, On Course is designed for nonprofit board members and officers, foundation trustees, higher education trustees, chief executives, executive directors, governance consultants, and others entrusted with the stewardship of mission-driven organizations.

This is not another collection of universal best practices. It is an invitation to ask a more useful question:

What does this organization need, in this environment, for this journey?

Every organization is on a journey. Good governance helps it stay on course.
