Synopsis

The sea did not take his father. Someone did. Sicily, 1889. Three years after his father vanished at sea, Luca Santoro learns the truth: Agostino Santoro was not lost to the water. He was hunted. What begins as a family mystery soon leads Luca to a hidden ledger filled with names, payments, corruption, and murder. When the men behind those secrets realize Luca knows too much, he is forced to leave Sicily carrying an iron key, a warning, and questions his father never had the chance to answer. His search takes him across the Atlantic to San Francisco, where the waterfront of the 1890s is crowded with fishermen, immigrants, laborers, political fixers, smugglers, and men willing to kill to protect their power. Trying to build a new life in a strange city, Luca finds himself caught between loyalty to family and the dangerous truth about the past. The deeper he digs, the more he discovers that the secrets surrounding his father reach far beyond Sicily-and that survival in San Francisco may require becoming a very different man from the one who arrived. Inspired in part by author Michael Sabella's own Sicilian family history and generations of connection to San Francisco's waterfront, Through Blood and Fog blends historical fiction, crime, immigration, family drama, and suspense. For readers who enjoy atmospheric historical mysteries, immigrant family sagas, organized crime fiction, and stories set in old San Francisco, Through Blood and Fog is a story of loyalty, ambition, sacrifice, revenge, and the price of building a new life in America.
