Synopsis

What happens when faith, identity, desire, and the longing to belong all inhabit the same life?

The Lost Whispers of Faith and Identity brings together the surviving writings and life story of Richard Buhrer—poet, nurse, man of faith, gay man, caregiver, seeker, and uncle.

Beginning with poetry written in the 1970s and continuing through journals, letters, dreams, prayers, drawings, and deeply personal reflections, Richard documented a decades-long journey toward understanding himself. His writings move between devotion and doubt, loneliness and intimacy, the body and the spirit, revealing a man determined to reconcile the different parts of himself rather than deny them.

Richard wrote candidly about love and sexuality, questioned the religious structures that shaped him, searched for belonging, cared for others through his work in nursing, and ultimately returned to Christian ministry as an Episcopal deacon.

After Richard’s death in 2022, his youngest niece, Danielle Buhrer, inherited the papers he left behind. She carefully preserved and assembled them, allowing Richard’s own words, handwriting, poetry, and artwork to remain at the heart of his story.

More than a collection of private writings, The Lost Whispers of Faith and Identity is the record of a human being continually becoming—asking questions that reach far beyond one life:

Who am I? What do I believe? Where do I belong? And what does it mean to be fully known and fully loved?

For decades, Richard’s words remained on paper, quiet and waiting.

They are not lost anymore.
