Synopsis

"And I will sign a new will."

Over dinner at Ninefold, his sprawling granite house above Merritt's Gap, Vermont, Augustin Hale tells his family that his lawyer will come up the hill at ten the next morning. By morning he is dead, the roads are closed, and the snow has shut the house in.

The Hales made their money from the dead: a century of selling New England its names in stone, and a fortune of more than six hundred million dollars. Augustin's own headstone came up the hill that afternoon, polished, with the date left blank. Now his sister, his three children, and three of his grandchildren are snowed in together, and the new will was never signed.

Wendell Pryce, the family archivist, tells the story. Livia Bassano, the seventy-two-year-old letter-cutter who carved the stone, stayed the night because Augustin wanted a witness of a different kind.

The Last Will of Augustin Hale is a witty, gothic, fair-play whodunit, with every clue on the page.
