Synopsis

The dead do not always stay dead. Neither do the masks they wore.

London, 1975. Eleanor Holmes-private detective, granddaughter of Sherlock Holmes, and the last living carrier of the Ashworth gene-receives a letter with no return address. The handwriting is ancient. The message is simple: Your grandfather is not dead. Come to Baker Street.

She has spent eight years running from her family's dark legacy. The sixth finger on her left hand. The masks that steal souls. The Progenitor who cannot die. But now the masks are being stolen again, and the copies-dozens of clones created from Holmes's blood-are disappearing one by one.

Someone is hunting them. Someone wears her mother's face.

From the burning Hall of Masks beneath St. Paul's to the hidden vaults of the Diogenes Club, Eleanor and the clone who calls himself John will descend into a labyrinth of porcelain and shadow. They will uncover the truth about Eleanor Ashworth-the woman who was both Mrs. Hudson and a prisoner. They will speak the Progenitor's true name. And they will face a Curator who has spent forty years building a new Collection from the ashes of the old.

But the greatest mystery is not the masks. It is the human heart. And in the end, Eleanor must choose: continue the chain of shadow, or break it forever.

The Collection of Faces is the third book in the Shadow Series, following The Chain of the Shadow and The Shadow's Return.
