Synopsis

Once upon a time, Lobo Lane was a decent man and an even better cowhand. But he had one fault-he just couldn't resist temptation. When they said it would get him hanged one day, he only laughed. But he should have remembered that warning when he stole money that was intended for the building of a Mormon temple in Salt Lake City ... because that's when Wells Fargo sends its top trouble-shooter, Clay Nash, after the stolen gold. When Nash discovers that the robber is Lobo Lane, the assignment becomes personal. Ten years earlier the two men were close friends, riding cattle trails, sharing danger and getting into more than their share of trouble together. Nash remembers Lobo as reckless and easily tempted, but not as a cold-blooded criminal. Now the two old trail partners find themselves on opposite sides of the law-but perhaps not on opposite sides of right and wrong. For Clay Nash, it is the final reckoning with Ford Hunnicutt and the Jarrett killers. For Lobo Lane, it is something more important: a last chance to prove that beneath all his weaknesses there is still something of the man Clay Nash once knew. But even if Lobo escapes the hangman and wins a pardon, there remains one question nobody-not even Lobo himself-can answer. Can a man who has spent his whole life surrendering to temptation ever truly leave the outlaw trail behind?
