Between 1991 and 1997, a serial killer stalked the eastern arrondissements of Paris. He followed young women home from Métro stations and murdered them in their apartments, leaving behind a forensic signature of extraordinary consistency and a trail of biological evidence that science could read but the system could not use. Seven women died. The killer was arrested after seven years not by investigative brilliance but by a desperate judicial improvisation - a magistrate ordering the manual comparison of 3,500 archived biological samples against a genetic profile that had been waiting, unmatched, in a Nantes laboratory throughout the murders.
The Beast of the Bastille is the full account of the Guy Georges case: the childhood abandonment and developmental catastrophe that made him, the institutional failures that allowed him to kill across two police jurisdictions and five arrondissements without identification, the forensic science that eventually caught him, and the confession he delivered in a Paris courtroom that silenced a gallery of grieving families. It is also the story of what the case built: the FNAEG, France's national DNA database, now generating forty thousand forensic identifications annually, built on legislation driven by the mother of one of Georges' victims.
A story of seven deaths, one arrest, and the law that outlasted them all.

Marcel Molony grew up in County Mayo on the western coast of Ireland, where a childhood spent between the Atlantic and the limestone karst of the Burren gave him an early taste for landscapes that conceal more than they reveal. His interest in European criminal history developed during years spent studying and working in France, where the particular architecture of French justice - its examining magistrates, its institutional grandeur, and its occasional spectacular failures - became an enduring fascination. He has written about crime, forensic science, and the history of punishment across several books, always with the conviction that the cases that most illuminate a society are the ones that society came closest to letting happen without consequence.
