Laurel Pike is a dental hygienist. She knows the name of everything that lives in a human mouth. She wears gloves to pump gas. She can't remember the last time someone touched her bare skin.
On the night before Thanksgiving, she's arrested on a warrant meant for another woman with the same name. The courts are closed for the holiday. Nobody will look at it until Monday.
Until then, she lives in a concrete cell with four strangers and a steel toilet with no walls around it. The only drinking water comes out of a tap on top of that toilet. The mattress smells of everyone who has ever slept on it. The only soap is a sliver with someone else's hair in it.
Then the girl in the bunk below her stops breathing, and Laurel is the only one in the room who knows what to do with her hands.
There are no gloves.
