Synopsis

Three hundred million years from now, long after the oceans have begun to boil away and the last life on Earth has retreated to a purple film on shadowed rock, a survey ship descends into a vast rift on a dead, bone-white world. Its crew are patient, post-biological scientists of an ancient Directorate that has read the stone of four hundred worlds. They have come to catalog the planet's final pages. What they find is a single dark line in the rock, less than a millimeter thick, that runs unbroken around the entire globe.

Inside that line is everything that ever happened to us. Plastic, radioactive fallout, rare-earth metals, the ash of burned oil and coal, and a single thread of gold, all compressed into a band thinner than a fingernail. To Core-Master Sael, the analyst Spin, the young technician Ilo, and the brilliant ship mind Loom, it is the most baffling extinction event ever recorded. Their science is flawless, and every clue has a natural explanation. Yet each answer only deepens the mystery, until the evidence begins to whisper something their Directorate has spent a billion years refusing to hear.

Interwoven with brief, luminous stories from our own era, from a child's lost toy dinosaur to a final text sent from a ferry rail, The Millimeter Horizon is a haunting, deeply human work of hard science fiction about memory, denial, and what the Earth will keep long after we are gone. It asks a question that grows more urgent with every page: if someone found us in the rock, would they even know we had been here?

À propos de l'auteur

A strategy-focused author under the Ignite imprint, exploring competitive dynamics and the 'Game of Win'.

"I have always believed that the most profound truths are found in the margins of old maps and the quiet corners of forgotten libraries. My work is an attempt to bridge the gap between the rigorous observation of the past and the wandering curiosity of the soul. Whether I am tracing the lineage of a thought or the path of a silk-road traveler, my goal remains the same: to find the pulse of humanity within the archives."

Barnaby Finch is a historian, essayist, and chronicler of the obscure. A lifelong collector of antique globes and out-of-print travelogues, Finch has spent the better part of two decades traversing the intersections of cultural anthropology and narrative non-fiction.

Known for his meticulous research and "lyrical realism," Barnaby's writing often focuses on:

The Philosophy of Place: How geography shapes the human psyche.

Archival Mysteries: Uncovering the personal stories hidden behind historical data.

The Art of Observation: A return to slow, intentional living in a digital age.

When he isn't at his desk in London or scouring a flea market in Marrakech for 19th-century journals, Barnaby can be found in his home library, usually with a cooling cup of espresso and a fountain pen in hand. His work serves as a reminder that while the world has been mapped, it has not yet been fully discovered.
