Synopsis

Arjun Mehra has spent most of his adult life making decisions worth millions. At forty-seven, he is respected, successful, and accustomed to being the man others turn to when markets become unpredictable. He has built a life around being right.

Then a promotion he quietly believed was his goes to someone else.

Nothing falls apart. His career continues. His colleagues still seek his judgment. The markets open every morning. Yet something has shifted, and Arjun finds himself struggling to understand why a disappointment he should be able to absorb has unsettled him so deeply.

Beyond the trading floor, other changes are gathering. His aging father is beginning to lose confidence in his own hands. Julia, the woman he loves, is growing tired of a relationship that must continually accommodate his work. His longtime mentor is preparing to leave the world they once believed would never change.

And when an unexpected opportunity offers Arjun a return to the life he knows best, he must confront a question he has spent years avoiding: what remains of him when achievement can no longer provide the answer?

Set against the demanding world of institutional finance, The Last Trade is an intimate, unsentimental story of a man slowly discovering how much of himself he has invested in the person he believes he must be.

Through professional disappointments, family conversations, old memories, and the awkward beginnings of a different way of living, Arjun comes to recognize that understanding his life may require something he has rarely practiced: allowing it to unfold without always trying to control the outcome.

A deeply human novel about love, aging, regret, and the difficult possibility of beginning again without becoming someone entirely new.
