Synopsis
A fresh start shouldn’t come with a presence.
In the first week of January 1999, a young family move into a newly refurbished two-bedroom council house in Scotswood, Newcastle upon Tyne. New windows. New kitchen. New bathroom. Friendly elderly neighbours. Small, cosy, and finally theirs.
Then the house begins to intrude.
It starts with stale pipe smoke drifting through rooms where nobody smokes. Then small, deliberate wrongness: keys turning up in the fridge, a wallet hidden where no hand should reach, tapping in walls and ceilings, heavy footsteps upstairs while the family sits downstairs.
Their toddler daughter is the first to name it.
“George,” she says, pointing into corners and giggling at someone unseen, until the laughter fades and fear takes its place. Because this isn’t a gentle ghost story. There are no drifting white figures or romantic legends. George is an elderly man with anger still clinging to him, and the longer the family stays, the more hostile the haunting becomes.
As winter turns to spring, the line between “strange” and “dangerous” disappears. Bruises appear without explanation. Scratches form where they shouldn’t. A shove on the stairs proves the house can do more than scare.
By the time an escape route opens in Denton Burn, leaving becomes a race against a house that doesn’t want to let them go.
