Synopsis

I was born in 1950, five years after the end of World War Two. When war broke out in September 1939 the government initiated a programme to evacuate young children away from areas it anticipated would be bombed by the enemy, to evacuate little ones away from danger and locate them in foster homes safely in the country away from cities.

I am here bringing together four separate pieces of writing I have put together over the years. I want to share stories with those who were fortunate enough, as was my generation, not to be part of this mass migration and with today’s younger generations for whom what I am about to share is history. It is actually more than history, it is heritage without which you reading these words would not be alive to read them or anything else for that matter.

This book is unique. Two of its chapters are true accounts with evacuees and those who cared for them at the centre. Two chapters are fiction.

  • THE EVACUEE
  • EVACUEES FROM LONDON
  • THE SECRET DIARY OF EVACUEE JONATHAN FLIE
  • EVACUEES

As you read, be it fact or be it fiction, place yourself into the situation the words are telling and try to imagine what you would have felt, how you would have reacted to being a wartime evacuee.
