These drawings were created by Daniel J. Frey (aka Toby) as part of a deeply personal online campaign in support of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)—an invitation to confront hate, disarm it, and transform it into the hope so many are searching for.
Across history, a quiet truth repeats itself: the helpers are most often the ones pushed to the margins. They are those whose right to exist has been questioned, denied, or threatened by systems built on fear and exclusion. Power—economic, social, political—rarely asks its beneficiaries to defend the people it harms.
And yet, again and again, someone steps forward.
Even in moments when the world insists everything is fine, there is always a voice willing to say otherwise—to remind us that the emperor has no clothes. These images live in that moment of interruption. They ask us to look honestly at ourselves, at our systems, and at the uncomfortable reality that love, while simple in idea, is one of the hardest practices of all.
This book is not a demand.
It is an offering.
A mirror.
And a call to choose empathy over fear—again and again.
All proceeds donated to the NAACP.
