Synopsis

Betty Banaszak has been teaching Bible since 1972 to school children, high school, college students and adult classes. To bring the scriptures to life, she created many short “enactments” to reinforce what they were learning in the classroom. The Book of Judges was first presented in 1979 in the rural Christian community in Hoonah, Alaska. From there it was produced by the same actors traveling by ferry to an affiliated Christian church in Juneau. When Betty and her family moved to Haines, Alaska, to help found a private Christian college, she directed the play with a whole new batch of young people. As word got out, other churches began to request copies. Today, almost fifty years later, the play is now being made available through Amazon.com. Costumes and props are all kept simple and easily procured from households or secondhand shops. Since each episode stands alone with its own Bible personages, the number of cast members can be relatively small as the same performers can play multiple parts. If a larger group is available, different players can be used in the successive episodes. There are serious life messages throughout the Biblical content, but also include many humorous scenes that have sent audiences rolling in laughter, such as Lord Round in the Ehud/Eglon episode, or Jael’s slaying of Captain Sisera in the Barak/Deborah war; Zebah and Zalmunna, the two Midianite stooges who are awakened with the frightening dream of a barley cake in the story of Gideon. To those of you who take up the challenge of producing this play on your own soil, I would hope that you, too, will be richly rewarded with the unforgettable memories that we are enjoying to this day.
