Synopsis

Lloyd Gypsum is tired. The planets are pulling at him. The DPW workers never show their faces. And the Senior City he lives in — nobody leaves. Episode 3 of Our Amplified Earth.

Everdale looks like 1950s America: the cars, the houses, the food. It's a golden-age themed Senior City on the Nevada frontier, built for veterans of the Third Opium War. Lloyd Gypsum just wants to sleep. Instead, he wakes up with new injuries every morning and no memory of getting them. When he and his war buddies start sharing each other's dreams — and realize the city's roads are always mysteriously under repair — the truth underneath the honeycomb and the riding mowers begins to surface. Paranoia. Celestial pulls. UN black-site experimentation. Nobody gets out clean.

The quietest episode in The Serial is also the most terrifying. ZZZ: The Triple Zed Project is set in Everdale — a government-run Senior City modeled on 1950s Americana, where veterans of the Third Opium War live out their days in carefully managed comfort. Lloyd Gypsum, a former combat pilot, has been waking up with injuries he can't explain and a chronic inability to sleep through the night. The gas giant Jupiter keeps calling.

What begins as a meditation on aging, memory, and the slow indignities of institutional care escalates into a full conspiracy: illegal neurological experimentation, shared dream states, manufactured identities, and a government that would rather retire its veterans than reckon with what it did to them. Waters writes the horror of Everdale with the bone-dry wit of a man who's been paying attention to how power actually works.

For fans of Philip K. Dick, The Prisoner, and anyone who's ever felt like the town they lived in was watching them.
