Synopsis

She Who Returns to the River
Stories of Sotavento

In a town where the river measures time more faithfully than any clock, returning is never a simple act.

When Carmela receives a late-night call from her hometown of Tlacotalpan, she leaves Mexico City and travels back to the house that faces the wide waters of the Papaloapan. Her mother is dying. The private dock behind the house stands unused. The windows remain open. And the river, as always, continues its course.

But what awaits her is more than farewell.

Years earlier, her brother Esteban disappeared beneath that same river during a summer afternoon that was never fully explained. No body was recovered. No certainty was reached. Only versions, silences, and a town that returned to its rituals as if nothing had been disturbed.

As February second approaches and the procession of the Virgin of Candelaria prepares to cross the water once more, Carmela begins to uncover fragments of a truth long suspended between memory and omission. A handkerchief embroidered with discreet initials. A suspicion never spoken aloud. A love that may have preceded her own birth. And the unsettling possibility that what happened on the river was not only an accident.

Part of the literary series Stories of Sotavento, this novel explores inheritance, silence, and the weight of what remains unsaid. In a place where territory becomes character and the river holds more than reflections, some returns are not about reconciliation — but about finally seeing what was always there.

The river keeps its course.
Not everyone does.
