Synopsis

Genre: Children's Fable / Picture Book
Themes: Pride, Patience, Deception, Wisdom vs. Cunning
Plot Overview
A vain grey wolf named Varg discovers his reflection in a forest stream and becomes entranced by his own beauty. While admiring himself, he spots three small trout swimming below and decides he wants to eat them.
When the wolf tries to lure the fish closer by flaunting his "magnificence," the wise old trout sees through his flattery and warns the others: "You look cunning." Rejected and hungry, the wolf doesn't give up—instead, he hatches a plan.
The wolf pretends to be defeated and heartbroken, lying down to "sleep" near the bank. He plays the role of a broken, humbled creature so convincingly that the younger fish begin to feel sorry for him. While they watch his "sleeping" form with pity, the wolf is actually busy digging a secret trench upstream to trap them.
When a heron suddenly attacks, the panicked fish flee—right into the wolf's carefully prepared trap. The wolf springs his ambush and finally catches his meal, proving that true cunning wears many masks.
Key Characters

  • Varg the Wolf: A proud, silver-furred predator who learns that patience and deception are more powerful than beauty or force
  • The Old Trout: A scarred, one-eyed fish who sees through deception but cannot save the young from their own pity
  • The Young Fish: Curious and compassionate, they learn the hard way that kindness to a predator can be fatal
  • The Heron: A silent observer who triggers the chaos, representing the unexpected dangers lurking in the forest
The Moral
The story teaches that appearances can be dangerously deceiving. The wolf's beauty blinds no one, but his performance of weakness does. True wisdom lies not in recognizing beauty or danger, but in understanding that hunger—and desperation—will wear any mask to survive.
