Synopsis
Michael Flood’s second novel continues his stories set in Jericho, Oxford. It is the story of Eileen Sorenson, who was first introduced to us in Transverse V-Twin as the mother of Eric, who we met as a fifty-nine year old in 1979.
Jericho takes us back to 1939, when Eileen is a bright, twenty-year old working-class girl with an enquiring mind who has won a scholarship at Oxford University. As war breaks out, Oxford becomes the heart of the intellectual and scientific fightback against the Nazis, experiencing huge demographic and behavioural changes that will deeply affect all those who live through it.
Eileen’s journey takes her from academia to a factory repairing RAF aircraft, then to the intense, secret world of aerial photographic intelligence, and finally back to a career in academia. Her life before, during and after the war is shaped by four men who represent the competing voices of her own heart: William, her first love who goes off to fight in North Africa and Italy; the impulsive and mercurial mathematician Graham; the artist John, who finds in Eileen a muse to describe a changing Britain; and her platonic friend Monty, a Harry Lime type character, who is transformed by his wartime experiences.
Set against a meticulously drawn backdrop of changing British life - from the enduring draw of music to Oxford's academic patriarchy, factory culture, and the postwar London art scene - Jericho is a literary exploration of a young woman’s fight for independence and her determination not to let social conventions hold her back. We watch Eileen negotiate her way through the toughest dilemmas, making bold decisions that will change her personal and professional life forever.
