A Ukrainian-language guide to the pre-Christian Slavic world as Ukraine remembered it. Three sections carry the reader from the high gods to the powers of the dark: Veles, Perun, Dazhboh, Mokosha, Svaroh and Lada; the nature and household spirits Domovyk, Lisovyk, Rusalka, Mavka, Chuhaister and Hodovanets; and Zmiy, Upyr, Viy, Chort, Vidma, Vovkulaka, Potercha, Mara and Perelesnyk. Each figure is told as narrative rather than as a dictionary entry, and grounded in the medieval chronicles and the nineteenth-century ethnographers instead of modern invention.

The book also follows what survived: why 31 October was Veles Night before it was Halloween, how Veles became Saint Vlasii and Perun Saint Illia, and why Ukrainians still do not whistle indoors or sit in silence before a journey. An author's note recovers the lost gods of Volodymyr's pantheon of 980 - Simargl, Khors and Stryboh - and a full bibliography cites Halaichuk, Voitovych, Myloradovych, the Primary Chronicle, The Tale of Ihor's Campaign, Gogol, Kotsiubynsky and Lesya Ukrainka.
