Synopsis

A water-spirit weds a knight to win a human soul-and learns that a soul is bought with grief.

Undine is a changeling raised by a poor old fisherman, wild and laughing as the stream she came from. When the knight Sir Huldbrand rides out of the haunted forest and marries her, she gains at last an immortal soul-and with it love, jealousy, and the terrible law of her own kind, for the water will not be cheated of what is its own. Fouqué's tale moves from the fisherman's cottage to the great walled city to the fountain in the courtyard that must never, ever be unsealed.

Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué's Undine (1811) is the enchanting German Romantic novella that stands behind every later mermaid and water-nymph story, from Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid to the ballet stage. This Lightbound Library edition gives the complete tale in an early public-domain English translation, behind an original painting by Jessica von Braun, published by Solocosmo Press.
