Synopsis
"There is only one big thing-desire." In the little Colorado town of Moonstone, a country doctor, a battered music-master, and above all her quiet, believing mother see what no one else can: that Thea Kronborg, the minister's tall Swedish daughter, has the gift of a great voice.
The Song of the Lark (1915) is Willa Cather's fullest and most personal novel - the story of a girl who carries her want of something larger out of a dusty prairie town, through years of cold rooms and hard practice in Chicago, into the ancient cliff-dwellings of the Southwest where she first hears her own power, and at last onto the great opera stages of the world. It is Cather's deepest study of what it costs, and what it means, to become an artist - and of the plain, watchful love that first believes in a gift.
