Synopsis

I am a NHS consultant paediatrician Dr Tim Newson from 1998-2022. I qualified in 1986 and had two road traffic. The initial accident I had a head injury and developed atrial arrhythmias. This heart arrhythmia were successfully treated with ablations. Then in 2016 I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease PD. My son noted I was dragging my left leg when on the homeward run in the Park run Saturday morning community run. Then following another RTA in 2021 my PD condition worsened again and I was forced to retire on ill health grounds.“Navigating Parky weather with words and paint “the title of this book is a good phrase to encompass many aspects of having Parkinson’s disease (PD). Sufferers endure many motor and non motor symptoms daily that worsen as the neuro-degeneration progresses.

This book is a reflective review of the life events that changed my health trajectories and mortality risk. The book shows some of the my paintings, poems and prose I created in response to my health issues.

I use the creative arts to deal with my PD . Poetry, meditation, mindfulness and music all can change brain chemistry . PD in early stages of treatment can unleash creativity that can have favourable impacts on quality of life in PD. PD runs in my family.I remember my grandmother having died from complications of PD . She died in the local hospital which she had known as the workhouse in her era. She had a sad death with bedsores in a place she feared.

I hope my NHS oddessy will be a more positive narrative and memoir.,about living with ill health but importantly PD.
