Synopsis

Peyton stands outside the boathouse of Yale University, working up the courage to enter in April of 1976. Her parents can be seen perched in their Cadillac, where she banished them. She refuses to be any further embarrassed by them than she already is. The wind blowing off the water remains frigid despite the subtle signs of spring bulbs that are starting to appear. She tries in vain to tame her hair back into its perfect bob. Mustering up the courage, she finally walks inside. She looks around and finally spies Brad, the boy her parents have chosen for her. He looks very at home in his collegiate surrounds. Brad rows crew for the prestigious university making him quite the catch for anyone, but especially for the daughter of his father’s law partner. The occasion is the launch of the spring crew season, but actually it’s just an excuse for the team to party.

Peyton saw “him” as soon as she entered the room. A strange face amongst the crowd. Not that she knew everyone present, but she knew that he didn’t fit in. His look was hard, almost scary yet she couldn’t seem to look away. He was just unkempt enough to make him look sexy, not slovenly. The dark hair hanging just to his shoulder he pushes behind his ear as he seems to concentrate fully on the beer in his hand. His dark and brooding eyes only deviate slightly from his cup as those around try and engage him in conversation. His clothes are expensive though an unseasoned eye wouldn’t pick up on that. Anyone who didn’t know quality might describe his dress as modest. He didn’t seem to notice her and why should he? Everything about her screamed classic and boring. And why should she care when she was unwillingly intended for another. Families such as hers would never allow something as important as marriage up to chance. At eighteen she really wasn’t young, but her sheltered upbringing had kept her naive, kept her under control. She was expected to marry well. In her small New England town, maneuvering things in such a way still existed but was it to be tolerated?
