Although the word “history” is derived from the Greek word “historia” meaning inquiry, the inquiry into the past events is essentially his story, told from his perspective. When the writer faced leadership challenges, she turned to history to locate the roots of her oppression and look at lessons she can draw from experiences of multiple generations of women leaders who came before hers. To her surprise, there was little and in most cases no records capturing experiences of women leaders of erstwhile generations. Available historic transcripts captured heroic stories of men with no reference to women leaders during their era. This is how “The Forgotten Gender” was born. She undertook a journey of chronicling “Herstory” as a contribution to fighting the erasure of women from the annals of history. Herstory in this book captures the stories of women of the world from African Queens to the Cuban sheroes, the American suffragist to the European Marxists. It also touches on the stories of women from the Holy Bible to the Holy Quran, from women in politics to women in science.
The writer reflects on the stories that she grew up hearing in the liberation movement and share lived experiences of different women generations. She tells stories of what she researched as she was maturing in politics. She tells stories of women she interviewed who may not have the means to put their stories across. In her view, chronicling “Herstory” is the only way to ensure that gender inequalities and the power relations between men and women remain central to “historical enquiry.”
