Who Is a Prophet
Direct Definition
A prophet is someone chosen by God to speak on His behalf. In Scripture, prophets receive divine revelation—through visions, dreams, or a direct word from the Lord—and then accurately communicate God’s heart, purposes, and sometimes future plans to His people.
Divine Calling
Prophets aren’t self-appointed. God calls them (often unexpectedly) and equips them by the Holy Spirit to fulfill their task (Exodus 3:1–10; Amos 3:7).
Messenger of God
Their primary role is to deliver God’s exact words, whether it’s a comfort, a call to repentance, or a warning of judgment (Jeremiah 1:7–10).
Forthtelling and Foretelling
They “forthtell” God’s will for the present—calling out injustice or idolatry—and sometimes “foretell” future events as God reveals them (2 Peter 1:21).
Moral Integrity and Courage
Living in alignment with what they proclaim is vital. Prophets often face opposition, yet they stand firm because they carry God’s authority (1 Kings 18; Jeremiah 20:7–9).
Communicate God’s Message
Act as the mouthpiece of Heaven, declaring what God wants His people to know.
Call to Repentance
Confront sin in individuals and nations, pointing them back to God’s covenant.
Advise and Counsel
Provide guidance to kings and communities based on divine insight (e.g., Nathan and David).
Announce Future Events
Reveal God’s unfolding plan—often to encourage faithfulness or warn of coming judgment.
Intercede in Prayer
Pray on behalf of others, standing in the gap between a holy God and a wayward people.
