This is a Civil War slavery era story about an innocent interracial love in a society which not only forbade such but systematically employed the harshest measures imaginable against it. Mary Caroline "Polly" Cates, an orphaned white child having inherited a cotton plantation in Alabama, and a little slave boy named Caleb share a color blind attraction which deepens as they come of age but her unscrupulous uncle who is acting as her guardian has devious plans to make the plantation his own and will stop at nothing to do so; even destroying his own flesh and blood. The lives of not only Polly and Caleb hang in the balance but those of everyone on the plantation-both black and white as the embers of a nation on fire sweeps across the land destroying everything in its path. BW/WM WW/BM romantic situations. Based upon true events.
